Students learn how to sew, sketch, design the latest trends, apply makeup, design a set, or plan a runway show! Flora Ellis Cohen is SFA's Fashion Expert and assumes the role of Costume & Production Assistant. Flora’s career, spanning over forty years in fashion, began with training at the French Fashion Academy in New York City, added to experience as a designer, pattern maker, fabric expert, and seamstress at multiple venues since 1965.
Flora added to her resume with time as an advertising assistant with J.C. Penney, Retail Manager with Jones New York, Evan Picone, Victoria’s Secret, and Maidenform while living in California, Delaware, and South Florida. Her retail career wrapped up with a 3-year stint as Guest Service Manager for Pembroke Lakes Mall.
At Miramar Cultural Center since 2012, her duties include design and creation of new costumes, repurposing, and alteration of older costumes for new productions, choosing patterns and fabrics for costumes, teaching, and supervision of associates in costume production and acting as company seamstress during theater productions.
She has worked on original shows such as “A Tribute to Stevie Wonder” and “The Ojays” as well as productions of “Fame”, “Shrek, the Musical” and “Hamlet” for which she adapted modern-day dress to the classic Shakespearean story.
In addition to Miramar Center, Flora also operates her own custom clothing and sewing instruction business “Simply Flora Concepts”, while supporting efforts of “Feeding South Florida” and sewing for” Masks Now.”
